Volunteers

Volunteers have played a vital role in a Trail Runs Through It. Although trail construction only began in the spring of 2009, volunteers have been moving the trail forward for years. It has been volunteers and active community members who have initiated ideas, participated on committees, advocated for recreation on public lands and guided the process long before we ever moved a shovel full of dirt. Through their efforts and yours, what was once a vision is now a great opportunity to hike, bike, and ride through our forests.

Last year, over 75 volunteers helped to build over 4.5 new miles of multi-use, single track trail through the lands surrounding the community of Whitefish, Montana. With shovels and pulaskis in hand, volunteers cleared brushed, moved dirt, and clipped roots helping to finish the tread and trail. Most importantly, volunteers seemed to have a really good time sharing stories and laughs as they worked. We had folks of all ages and walks of life on the trail; there were students, school groups, families, friends, and clubs, all getting to know one another – all working together.

This spring and summer, another 4 miles of new trail will be constructed. We are also planning a Grand Opening for this community trail in July. We will need your help (and your friends’ help) in order to reach our goal. As in the past and now still, volunteers play an extremely important role in the trail.

Helping with the trail construction is not the only way you can participate. We will need help with organizing events, offering input on committees, fundraising, and general support. If you have a skill, the time, and the enthusiasm, opportunities will arise for you to volunteer.

We encourage you to volunteer and to come join in the fun. Gather your friends or organize your hiking club, biking club, equestrian club, walking, club, running club, or school group. Work parties will be planned throughout the spring and summer. We will keep you posted and look forward to working with you. Please sign up now. Happy trails!
